I love using essential oils to make my home smell great. It’s so much better to make my own air fresheners than using the chemical-filled, artificial air fresheners from the store. All it takes is water, witch hazel, and essential oil and you can whip up your own homemade all-natural room spray in about 30 seconds.
I really do love a good homemade room spray. Since starting this blog, I’ve shared recipes for nearly 100 of my favorite air freshener blends. This post has 15 of my favorite summer room spray recipes, but I’ve also shared my favorite recipes in these other blog posts: fall room sprays, winter air fresheners, Christmas room sprays, immune-support room sprays, and spring sprays.  If you love essential oil room sprays like I do, check them out. They’re not only great for your home, they make great gifts, and they’re fun, easy make & take classes, too.
What you need to make homemade room spray:
- glass spray bottle – I use 8 oz size, but any size glass spray bottle will work. Avoid plastic bottles as undiluted essential oils can break down plastic.
- water – I use distilled water, but you can also use boiled and cooled filtered water.
- witch hazel
- essential oils

California Coast room spray
Last summer my family took a three-week road trip along the California coast from San Diego to San Francisco. It was an amazing trip! One of our favorite parts was getting to spend a few days along the bay between Monterey and Santa Cruz. We were fortunate and got to take long walks along the bay, hike through the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, eat fresh-picked strawberries, and explore the beautiful vistas of Big Sur. This room spray combination reminds me of the California coast. The warm, woody scents of cedarwood and frankincense mix well with the sweet, lighter scents of orange, lavender, and spearmint. It’s like walking through the redwoods, eating a fresh strawberry, and smelling the crisp ocean air all at the same time. Delightful!

Sea Breeze room spray
I originally created this scent for my DIY Sea Breeze Bath Bombs.  Is there any place more relaxing than the beach? I love the feel of sand in-between my toes, the wind gently blowing through my hair, the warm sun on my skin, and of course, the sweet smell of the salt air. That ocean smell, it’s fabulous! If I could bottle it, I would. I’ve come up with an essential oil blend that, while it doesn’t smell exactly like the ocean, its combination of sweet lavender, citrusy lime, and crisp clear hint of spearmint transport me (at least emotionally) to the seaside.
To make room spray:
- fill 8 oz glass spray bottle about 3/4 full with distilled water
- fill most of the rest of the way full with witch hazel
- 17Â drops lavender essential oil
- 17 drops lime essential oil
- 6Â drops spearmint essential oil
- put on sprayer top and shake well to mix
To use: Shake bottle gently before each use. Spray into the air to freshen room. Use as often as needed.

Does the witch Hazel in your room sprays act as a preservative against possible mold development?
No, witch hazel is not a preservative.
You can add a preservative if you’d like. Or you can make water-based DIYs in small enough batches that you use them quickly and store them in the refrigerator to slow down any growth.
