All of the Christmas room spray recipes below follow the same simple recipe:

  1. Start with a 16 oz glass bottle like this amber one or like this clear one
    • tip: recycle glass apple cider vinegar bottle and add a spray top like this  or like this or like this
    • tip: want to make a different scent for every room?  Use a smaller glass bottle and make several room sprays.  It’s easy.  Use a 4 oz glass spray bottle like this or like this just cut the recipes below to one-quarter of the original amounts (that is, use 2 oz distilled water, 1/2 oz witch hazel, and about 10-12 drops of essential oil)
  2. add 8 oz distilled water to the bottle
    • tip:  Make sure to get distilled water and not regular filtered or spring bottled water.  Using distilled water will help your room spray to last for several months.
    • tip:  You can find distilled water at your grocery store.   It’s usually less than $1 for an entire gallon (which is enough to make 16 bottles of room spray).
    • tip: using a cute little funnel like this makes it really easy to add your ingredients to the bottle.
  3. add 2 oz of organic witch hazel (like this)
    • tip:  witch hazel helps to keep the essential oils emulsified in the water.  If you don’t have witch hazel, you can use 2 tsp of epsom salt instead.   Simply add the essential oils to the epsom salt. stir to distribute oil throughout salt, and then add oil/salt mixture to distilled water.
    • tip:  And it you don’t have either witch hazel or Epsom salt, no worries, you can leave them out.  You’ll just want to shake the room spray well each time before you use to to distribute the essential oils throughout the water.
  4. add 40-50 drops of essential oils (see below for recommended blends that total 40-50 drops)
  5. use this free printable file to print out your labels on waterproof vinyl paper like these.  Your bottles will be super cute, you’ll know exactly what’s in each one, and if you use waterproof vinyl paper like these, your labels will stay as great looking even if you get water or essential oils on them.

Hi, Jessica. I’m glad you like the room spray recipes! And thanks for letting us know that we had accidentally included draft pages in the pdf. We’ve deleted the extra pages, so now the pdf only has the one page of labels that it was intended to have. Thanks again for letting us know. – Sarah

Is there a recommended brand of essential oils you use? I love these recipes! I LOVE Christmas too!

    • Sarah Lewis October 7, 2016 at 9:25 am - Reply

      Hi, Lorna.
I don’t recommend, sell, or promote any particular brands of essential oils, but I do recommend using high quality, 100% pure essential oils that don’t have any synthetics or fillers.

    Great page!
    Lots of ideas!

Btw, is wild orange the same with orange?
I’ve tried to find information about this but couldn’t find the comparison between wild orange and orange.

    • Sarah Lewis November 21, 2016 at 7:59 pm - Reply

      Hi Flo.
      Thanks for your note!
Yes, wild orange is the same as orange or sweet orange. Sorry for the confusion.
There is also a bitter orange essential oil (also known as petitgrain essential oil), but so far I haven’t used that one in a recipe.
      Thanks again for your question.

Does this leave an oily spray when used

    • Sarah Lewis September 6, 2017 at 6:26 pm - Reply

      HI, Laurie.
As long as you shake the bottle well before spraying, it should leave very little, if any, oily residue. The spray mixture is made up of about 4,800 drops of water, 1,200 drops of witch hazel, and only 40-50 drops of essential oil. So when the mixture is sprayed around the room, you’ll likely only be spraying 1 drop of essential oil broken into tiny little droplets that are intermixed with lots of water and witch hazel.
However, if you are going to spray it on fabrics (verses into the air), I would do a spot test in an inconspicuous place on the fabric, just to make sure that it’s okay.
