I hate the stinky smells that come from trash cans. It can make an otherwise clean kitchen smell very un-clean.
The good news is that it’s very easy to make your own homemade trash can deodorizer spray. Just pour a couple of all-natural ingredients into a spray bottle along with essential oils, give it a shake, and spray. Odors are gone within seconds! And this deodorizing spray keeps working hard – killing bacteria, neutralizing odor, and eliminating bad smells. Garbage cans smell fresh and clean for days.
Use it in the kitchen trash can, outdoor garbage can, diaper pail, or bathroom trash baskets. Just a few sprays of this odor-neutralizing essential oil spray will get rid of the stink and keep your home smelling clean.
Want other options for keeping your trash cans clean? Try these trash can deodorizer tabs (recipe here) – using the power of baking soda and essential oils, they naturally eliminate odors instead of just covering them up with heavy perfumes) or this homemade Lysol disinfecting spray (recipe here) for tougher smells and serious cleaning.
How to make garbage can deodorizing spray with essential oils
step 1:Â add 2 tablespoons vinegar to a 4 ounce spray bottle
tip: be sure to use a spray bottle that is safe to use with essential oils. Glass, stainless steel, and certain types of plastic (#1 PET or #2 HDPE) work well.
tip: this recipe is for 4 ounces of deodorizing spray, but you can use a larger spray bottle if you’d like.
step 2:Â add the following essential oil
7 drops peppermint essential oil
10 drops orange essential oil
10 drops lemon essential oil
tip:Â If you don’t have these essential oils or don’t care for their scent, you can substitute other essential oils with similar antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, such as tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary, tangerine, or lime.
step 3:Â fill the 4 ounce bottle with distilled water
tip: be sure to leave a little room at the top so that the bottle doesn’t overflow when you put the spray top on.
tip:Â if you’re using a spray bottle that’s larger than 4 oz, add about 1/3 cup of distilled water to your bottle.
tip:Â if you don’t have distilled water, you can use boiled and cooled filtered water instead.
step 4:Â put the spray top on the bottle and apply label (get your free printable label here)
tip: I print the label on regular, plain printer paper.  Then I attach it to the spray bottle using packing tape. I find that this method does a great job of keeping the label adhered to the bottle and makes it waterproof so that it stays looking great for a long time. Or, if you prefer, you can also print the label on full-sheet label paper instead.
tip: Before putting on the label, wipe the spray bottle with a bit of rubbing alcohol to make sure that the bottle is completely clean and the label will stick very well.
