Why Lavender and Vanilla?
There’s something magical about lavender and vanilla together. Here’s why they’re a match made in scent heaven:
- Lavender Essential Oil is known for its calming and stress-relieving properties. It brings a floral freshness that instantly relaxes your mind and body.
- Vanilla Oleoresin (aka vanilla essential oil) adds a soft, sweet, and slightly warm note, creating a comforting and soothing experience.
The result? A light, balanced scent that’s calming, sweet, and completely irresistible!
They’re the perfect aromatherapy duo, soothing your senses while making you smell amazing.

Lavender Essential Oil
- Known for its soothing properties, lavender offers a calming aroma that relaxes both body and mind.
- Its fresh, floral, and herbaceous notes create a light, tranquil fragrance perfect for everyday use.
Vanilla Oleoresin (aka Vanilla Essential Oil)
- Lavender and vanilla blend harmoniously in this body spray, creating a balanced and inviting scent.
- Vanilla’s warm, sweet aroma brings comfort and relaxation, adding depth to the fragrance.
- As a base note and natural fixative, vanilla not only provides a lasting cozy scent but also enhances and prolongs the other fragrance notes.
Spearmint Essential Oil (Optional)
- Pairs beautifully with lavender and vanilla fragrances.
- As a top note, it brings a crisp, refreshing, and uplifting touch to the sweet, floral base of lavender and vanilla, enhancing the overall scent while allowing the core aromas to remain prominent.
Tonka Bean Absolute (Optional)
- Enhances the depth and richness of body spray.
- Tonka offers a warm, sunny, and comforting aroma. While reminiscent of vanilla bean, it also carries delightful hints of freshly cut hay and sweetgrass.
- As a fragrance fixative, Tonka Bean Absolute helps prolong the scent’s longevity by locking fragrance molecules onto the skin. Its moisture-attracting properties slow evaporation, ensuring the body spray’s aroma lasts longer.
190-Proof Grain Alcohol (Everclear)
- Effectively Solubilizes Essential Oils: Essential oils are naturally hydrophobic, meaning they don’t mix well with water-based ingredients. However, 190-proof grain alcohol (Everclear) efficiently solubilizes essential oils, blending them into a unified solution. This mixture can then be seamlessly combined with other water-based components for body sprays and similar products.
- Safe for Skin Application: By dissolving essential oils into a cohesive liquid, the alcohol ensures they are safe for direct application to the skin when used in sprays.
- Prolongs Shelf Life: In addition to its blending properties, 190-proof alcohol acts as a natural antibacterial agent, helping to preserve the body spray and extend its usability.
- Alternative option: If Everclear is unavailable in your area or you refer to not have consumable alcohol in your home, perfumer’s alcohol (find it here) is an excellent substitute. This 200-proof alcohol is denatured to prevent consumption, making it an ideal alternative for crafting body sprays and similar products.
Vegetable Glycerin
Glycerin is my go-to secret ingredient for homemade body sprays, and here’s why:
- Extends fragrance longevity: Glycerin works as a natural fixative, locking fragrance molecules onto the skin with its moisture-attracting properties. This slows evaporation and keeps the scent lasting longer.
- Hydrates: As a powerful humectant, glycerin pulls water from the air to help keep your skin moisturized and hydrated.
- Gentle on skin: It softens alcohol’s harsh effects, helping to prevent dryness and irritation often caused by topical alcohol use.
Witch Hazel
- Opt for unscented witch hazel with no added ingredients to ensure the best and most gentle results on your skin.
- It’s an excellent choice for diluting alcohol and essential oils when crafting body sprays, as it helps blend the ingredients smoothly.
- It’s safe for most skin types, including sensitive skin, making it suitable for a wide range of users.
3 Essential Tips for Creating the Perfect Homemade Body Spray
Making your own body spray is so much fun – and surprisingly simple! With just a few key tips, you can create a personalized scent that smells amazing and lasts for hours. Let’s dive in!
-
Oil and Water Don’t Mix (Without a Little Help!)
Ever heard that oil and water don’t mix? It’s true! But don’t worry, there’s an easy fix. To make your body spray blend perfectly, you’ll need the right ingredients and ratios. Here’s what works:
-
- Use 190-proof grain alcohol (like Everclear) or 200-proof perfumer’s alcohol as your base.
-
- Combine the ingredients in the correct ratio (no shortcuts here!).
-
- Let your mixture sit for a little while so everything can merge into one smooth, unified blend. This step is key to making sure your spray doesn’t separate over time or when you add other ingredients.
-
Craft a Scent with Balance (Top, Middle, and Base Notes)
Here’s where the magic happens – creating a scent that’s balanced and beautiful! Fragrances are made up of three layers, and each plays a unique role:
-
- Top Notes (5-20%): These are the first impressions of your spray! They’re light, fresh, and sharp but don’t last long. Think citrusy or herbal notes like lemon or peppermint.
-
- Middle Notes (60-80%): Known as heart notes, these make up the core of your fragrance. They’re smooth, rich, and give depth to your scent. Lavender, rose, or chamomile are wonderful options.
-
- Base Notes (5-25%): These are the long-lasting notes that linger the longest. They’re heavier and denser, like vanilla, sandalwood, or patchouli. They ground your fragrance and tie everything together beautifully.
-
Fixatives to Make Your Scent Last Longer
Want your body spray to smell amazing all day? Fixatives are the secret sauce! They help your fragrance last longer by slowing down the evaporation of the essential oils. Natural options like vanilla oleoresin or tonka absolute are perfect for extending the life of your spray – and they smell incredible too!
So, are you ready to create your very own signature body spray? With these simple tips, you’ll make something that’s uniquely yours – and so much fun to share with others! Happy blending!
How to Make Body Spray with Essential Oils
Step 1: Prepare Your Essential Oil Blend
Start by adding the following essential oils to an 8 oz glass spray bottle:
- 50 drops lavender essential oil
- 12 drops vanilla oleoresin (aka vanilla essential oil)
- 5 drops tonka absolute (optional)
- 10 drops spearmint essential oil (optional)
Step 2: Using a small funnel, carefully pour 1/3 cup of 190-proof grain alcohol (Everclear) into spray bottle
Alternative option: If Everclear is unavailable in your area or you refer to not have consumable alcohol in your home, perfumer’s alcohol (find it here) is an excellent substitute. This 200-proof alcohol is denatured to prevent consumption, making it an ideal alternative for crafting body sprays and similar products.
Step 3: Secure the spray bottle top, mix thoroughly, and let it rest.
After attaching the top, swirl the alcohol and essential oils together until well combined. Then, set the mixture aside for at least one hour.
Important: Don’t rush this step. The waiting period is essential, as it allows the high-proof alcohol to fully dissolve the essential oils. This process, called solubilization, ensures the alcohol and essential oils blend into a stable, unified solution that won’t separate over time.
Step 4: In a separate bowl or container, combine 1/2 cup of witch hazel with 1 teaspoon of glycerin, mixing thoroughly.
Step 5: Pour the witch hazel and glycerin mixture into the spray bottle, combining it with the alcohol and essential oils.
Step 6: Mix thoroughly until the liquid is clear and uniform
Step 7: Seal bottle and let it rest
Once you’ve finished making your body spray, secure the top and store it in a dark, cool place for at least 7 days before using it.
Note: While it might be tempting to use your body spray right away, patience is key. Allowing it to rest for a week or more ensures the alcohol scent fades and gives the essential oils time to blend harmoniously with the other ingredients. Trust me—it’s worth the wait!

- Store in a cool, dark place to preserve its quality and fragrance.
