Why you should add Epsom salt, baking soda, sea salt, and essential oils to your bath water

Making bath salts is incredibly easy!

Combine the following ingredients, trying to somewhat evenly distribute the essential oil.  Once mixed well, store the bath salts in a glass container like this or this or this or this.   And tie a fun (and functional) spoon or scoop (like this or this or this) to the jar to make a super cute gift!

Depending on the size of your tub, use about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of this salt blend per bath.

It’s super fun to make bath salts.  They make great gifts.  And of course, it’s incredibly relaxing to take baths, especially at the end of a long, stressful day.

 

But why do we add Epsom salts, sea salt, baking soda, and essential oils to our baths? 

What does each of these ingredients do for us?  What ‘s the benefit of adding them?

Epsom Salt

Did you know that Epsom salt is not actually a salt?  It’s actually a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate.

Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits

Benefits of Epsom Salt:

– eases stress and relaxes the body

– helps draw toxins out of the body

– helps reduce inflammation

– helps improve the absorption of nutrients

 

Sea Salt

Dead Sea Salts contain 21 minerals including magnesium, calcium, sulfur, bromide, iodine, sodium, zinc and potassium. These essential minerals naturally occur in our bodies but must be replenished, as they are lost throughout the day. These minerals are known to treat, detoxify, and cleanse our bodies.

Benefits of Dead Sea Salt:

– Potassium helps to balance skin moisture

– Bromides helps reduce muscle pain and stiffness

– Sodium helps improves the circulation of lymphatic fluid

– Magnesium helps support a great night’s sleep

– Iodine is important for the correct functioning of the thyroid gland and is aids in the body’s metabolic exchanges

Sulfur is known as a powerful detoxifying agent, as it works closely with the liver to rid the body of toxins

 

Baking Soda

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, provides a naturally alkaline substance with a reputation for helping to remove toxins.  Yep, this is the same stuff you use in baking and to freshen your refrigerator.

Benefits of Baking Soda:

– Helps to detoxify and alkalize your body

– Helps to soften the skin

– Leaves skin feeling silky soft

 

Essential Oils

Essential oils are a wonderful addition to a bath, because their therapeutic benefits are easily absorbed by the skin.

Benefits of Essential Oil:

Lavender: eases feelings of tension and soothes occasional skin irritations

Cedarwood: promotes relaxation

Bergamot: calming and provides skin purifying benefits

Wild orange: uplifting to the body and mind

Roman chamomile: calming effect on skin, mind, and body

Patchouli: grounding, balancing effect on emotions.  Reduces the appearance of wrinkles, blemishes, and skin imperfections.

Frankincense:  promotes feelings of relation and reduces the appearance of skin imperfections

Ylang ylang:  lessens tensions and pressure, promoting a positive outlook.  Promotes mood while having a calming effect.

Sandalwood:  grounding and balancing with a mediation-like effect

Geranium:  promotes appearance of clear, healthy skin

 

So that’s why you should add Epsom salt, sea salt, baking soda, and essential oils to your bath.

    • Yes, that would be a great add. Just be careful getting in and out of the tub because it might be slippery.
