Roller Bottle Recipes & Free Printable Labels

I’m very excited about this post!  One of my favorite blog posts I’ve ever done is 21 roller bottle blends for emotions.  Not only are they many of my favorite roller bottle recipes, but the really exciting thing (for me at least) is that the free printable labels have the roller bottle recipe right on the label!  Loved that!  I no longer had to wonder what was in the bottle or try to track down a recipe when I wanted to refill the bottle.

This post today has my top 6 must-have roller bottle recipes.

These are the roller blends that I always have near me.

I carry them in my purse and keep a second set by my bed.

I’m never far away from these handy roller remedies.

And the tin cases are not only portable, they keep the bottles nicely organized and serve as a convenient place to keep my recipes, too!

(I keep the recipe card for all 6 roller blends on the bottom of the tin)

What’s a roller bottle?

A roller bottle is used to dilute essential oils with a carrier oil (like fractionated coconut oil) and apply the oil/essential-oil blend topically to skin.  Roller bottles have three parts:

  1. bottle – The bottle is made of glass and can be clear, amber, or in a wide range of rainbow colors.  Using amber and UV-coated colored glass bottles is often preferable because essential oils degrade in sunlight.  Even with a UV coating though, it’s best to store roller bottles in a cool, dark spot to help them last as long as possible.
  2. rollerball– Rollerballs can be made of glass, metal, or plastic.  They nest inside of a plastic casing that snaps into the bottle.  The glass/plastic/metal ball rotates around and gets coated in the oil/essential-oil blend and applies that mixture to the skin.
  3. cap– twists on over the rollerball.

How to make roller bottles with essential oil?

step 1:  start with a 10 ml glass roller bottle and remove rollerball

Tip: While you can pop off a rollerball using its cap or just with your fingers, it’s MUCH easier to use a handy tool like this.  Slip the open-ended side of the tool underneath the rollerball (as shown in the photo below) and then push down gently on the other end of the tool.  Pop, that’s it.  The rollerball comes right off of the bottle.

step 2:  add essential oil (see my 6 must-have roller bottle recipes farther down in the post for the specific essential oils and amounts)

How many drops of essential oil you add depends on who you’re making blend for and how often it will be used.  Here are the rules of thumb I use for my family:

  • 10 drops of essential oil –> for occasional use by adults (5% dilution)
  • 4 drops of essential oil –> for regular use by adults and kids age 10+ (2% dilution)
  • 2 drops of essential oil –> for kids age 2-9 (1% dilution)

step 3:  fill rest of 10 ml roller bottles with fractionated coconut oil (fc0).

Fractionated coconut oil (fco) is also called liquid coconut oil.  FCO is completely soluble with other oils, making it a great carrier oil.  It’s odorless, colorless, extremely light, absorbs into the skin quickly, and has a very long shelf life.

Tip:  It’s helpful to use a little funnel when filling the roller bottles with carrier oils.

Tip:  Be sure to leave a little space at the top so that’s there’s room to put the roller ball back on.

step 4:  snap on the roller ball

That essential oil tool comes in handy again.  It’s not only great for taking OFF rollerballs, it’s also very helpful for snapping rollerballs back ON to the bottles.

To put the rollerball on the bottle, put the medium-sized hole over the rollerball, and then press down gently on both ends of the tool until you feel it click securely into place.

step 5:  shake the bottle to mix the carrier oil and essential oils

step 6:  print out roller bottle labels & recipe card (get the free printable labels here)

Pages 1& 2 are best to use if you’re printing a set for yourself – there’s 1 set of labels and 1 recipe card.

Pages 3 & 4 are best to use if you’re printing sets for a make & take class or girls night with your friends.  Those pages have two sets of labels and recipe cards in order to conserve paper.

Tip:  Print them one page at a time, because you’ll want to print them on different types of “paper.”

  • Print the roller bottle labels on full-sheet labels.
  • Print the recipe card on plain copier/printer paper or cardstock.

step 8:  remove label paper backing and adhere labels to bottles

Tip: Make sure roller bottles are clean before sticking on labels.  If needed, wipe the outside of roller bottles with rubbing alcohol to clean and dissolve any oils that may have gotten on the outside of the bottle.

    • Hi Laura,

      They are cute, aren’t they?

You can find them on Amazon here https://amzn.to/35Mi9IN or https://amzn.to/35JCv5m

You can also google for them to see if a better deal pops up at another store. You’re looking for a hinged tin with inner dimensions: approx. 5 1/4″ x 3 3/8″ x 7/8″ Getting the right size is what’s important so that they fit roller bottles properly.

    • I usually use plain printer/copier paper. I then cut the labels out and apply them to the bottles using packing tape. Super cheap and holds up really well to the oils.

Alternatively, you can use full sheet label paper. If using label paper, look for one that’s at least water resistant and best if it’s oil resistant. If you just use regular label paper, ink will tend to smear over time because of the oils getting on the label.

  1. Hi there, I want to know if I can use these blends to make a perfume? Are these essential oils suitable for spray perfumes with alcohol?

    • Yes, you can use these as a perfume as they are with the carrier oil in the roller bottle. The Be Calm blend is probably the recipe that smells the most like a traditional perfume.

In terms of turning these into a spray perfume with alcohol, I wouldn’t do that for the blends with hot essential oils like cinnamon and oregano. Milder essential oils like lavender, cedarwood, orange and frankincense that’s in the Be Calm blend would be great in an alcohol spray perfume.

  2. I love your website! Better than any other that I have found. Question: Do I have to enter my email address every time I want to print something?

    • Hi Chris,
Wow, thanks! I’m so happy that you’re finding my site helpful. I have so much fun sharing things, but there’s always so much more that I want to do.
Yes, for now, you do need to enter your email each time you want to get a printable. It’s kind of like a membership site, but you don’t need to remember a password. Just enter your email and the link to the printable will pop up in a new box. As long as you use the same email address, you’ll only be on my list once.
With new recipes, I’m starting to use printing tool that allows readers to easily print the recipe and basic instructions much like you would a food recipe. No email is needed to do that. But for printables like labels, ebooks, and lots of recipes (like diffuser blends), you’ll need to still enter your email address.
Thanks for asking. So glad you found us. Welcome!
      Sarah

  3. I wanted to know a couple things. Tired to click on the min funnel but wasn’t linked.
and I would like to know how you print the labels and what you use. Where do you buy your oil from? I have looked on your page to click and can’t find it.

    I love your web page

    Deb

    • Hi Debra,
      Thanks for your note!
Glad you were able to find the mini funnel. Did you find the link for the printable labels?
I print my rollerball labels on plain printer paper, nothing fancy. Then I cut the labels out, place them face down on packing tape. Packing tape is clear wide tape that’s probably about 2 inches wide. It’s nice and thick so it makes the labels really durable. And it protects the paper labels from any oil that might drip on them. For me, it works great. It’s really cheap and lasts better than most special (and expensive) label paper that I’ve tried.
A couple of tips – 1) wipe the roller bottle with a little bit of rubbing alcohol to clean it before your put the label on and 2) stick one end of the tape to the bottle and then wrap the label around the bottle and finish by overlapping the tape a half inch or more so that the tape sticks to the tape.
I don’t sell essential oil or endorse a specific brand, that’s why I don’t have links to essential oils on my site. I try to help people use the essential oils that they have. You can get essential oils directly from manufacturers, from friends and family who sell essential oils, in retail stores, and online.
