Easy 2-Ingredient Essential Oil Deodorant Recipe

It’s hard to find natural deodorants that really work.

And even harder to find effective ones that don’t cost a fortune.

That’s why I’m really excited to share one of my favorite natural deodorant recipes with you!

It stops odor, keeping me smelling fresh & clean all day.

It’s a super easy and cheap DIY made with essential oils and milk of magnesia.  Yep, just 2 ingredients.  But it REALLY DOES WORK.

Why I love this deodorant

  • super cheap — least expensive natural deodorant I’ve ever bought or made.  One bottle of milk of magnesia only costs about $3 and lasts me 3-5 months.
  • incredibly easy to make — just pour essential oil and milk of magnesia into a bottle and shake.  That’s it!  It takes less than 1 minute to make.
  • effective — it really works!  It stops odor before it starts.  No more stink.  This keeps me smelling fresh & clean all day long.
  • natural – I love eliminating harsh chemicals and toxins from my home.  And deodorant is one of the best places to start.  Store-bought deodorant can be full of so many damaging chemicals (like aluminum, parabens, pesticides, and other carcinogens).
  • no baking soda or other harsh ingredients – I have sensitive skin in general, and my underarms are even more sensitive.  Baking soda can cause my skin to turn red and break out in a rash of bumpy, prickly discomfort.  So I love that this deodorant doesn’t have baking soda, and that it is gentle on my sensitive skin.

  1. milk of magnesia – yep, you read that correctly.  This is the same milk of magnesia that’s generally used as a laxative.  Turns out, it’s also an excellent deodorant!  Just be sure to look for a natural milk of magnesia (like this).  Some brands have added bleach, and of course, you don’t want to be putting bleach onto your underarm skin.  yuck!  You can find it online here or at stores like Dollar General, Krogers, Walgreens, and CVS.  Check the ingredients list before purchasing to confirm that it doesn’t have bleach (sodium hypochlorite).
  2. essential oils (see below for a list of great essential oil combinations for making natural deodorant)
  3. funnel
  4. for roll-on deodorant (option 1): large 30 ml roller bottle (find them here or here)
  5. for spray deodorant (option 2):  4 oz spray bottle – look for one with a great trigger sprayer like this so that the deodorant sprays easily.  Because you’ll be using essential oils in this deodorant, use either a glass spray bottle or a type of plastic that’s safe for diluted essential oils (PET plastic #1 or HDPE plastic #2)

Why does milk of magnesia work so well for deodorant?

Milk of magnesia (MOM) is generally used as a laxative, but when it’s used topically, it turns out it is also an excellent natural deodorant.  Why is that?

It’s because milk of magnesia is made of magnesium hydroxide suspended in water, and magnesium has excellent antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.    It’s the magnesium that works so well as a deodorant.  It inhibits bacteria from growing on your underarms.  And since it’s bacteria that causes stink and body odor, if there isn’t bacteria, then there isn’t stink or body odor.

Magnesium works so well as a deodorant that some people will use magnesium oil (magnesium chloride) as their deodorant.  If you’re not sensitive to magnesium chloride, then this can be another great option. But many people find this too strong, and using magnesium oil straight irritates their underarms causing stinging, redness, and itching.  Diluting magnesium into a cream (like my magnesium cream deodorant – recipe here or my calming magnesium body butter – recipe here) is a great way to lessen these negative effects.

Which essential oils are good for making natural DIY deodorant?

With their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and pleasant scents, many essential oils are great for making natural deodorant.  Here are some of my favorites:

  • lavender
  • clary sage
  • geranium
  • cedarwood
  • cypress
  • lemongrass
  • eucalyptus
  • tea tree
  • coriander
  • sandalwood
  • patchouli
  • peppermint or spearmint
  • citrus essential oils like bergamot, lemon, lime, tangerine, orange, and grapefruit (don’t use if your skin will be exposed to the sun, because citrus essential oils can cause photosensitivity)

15 Essential oil blends for making DIY deodorant

Even more fun than just using a single essential oil is making your own custom essential oil blend.  Do you have a favorite deodorant scent?  Here are some of mine.  There are a mix of scents that are floral, woodsy, crisp & clean, bright & sunny — find one that you love and then use it in the recipes below.

  1. eucalyptus and lemongrass
  2. lavender and clary sage
  3. cedarwood and juniper berry
  4. bergamot and lime
  5. lavender and bergamot
  6. lavender, lime, and spearmint
  7. lavender, cedarwood, tea tree, lemon, and eucalyptus
  8. coriander, lemongrass, lavender, tea tree, and cypress
  9. ylang ylang and frankincense
  10. lime, vetiver, and lemongrass
  11. sandalwood, patchouli, and cypress
  12. basil, cypress, orange, and rosemary
  13. coriander, cypress, geranium, and ylang ylang
  14. orange and eucalyptus
  15. lavender and vanilla (there isn’t vanilla essential oil, but vanilla oleoresin like this works well)

  1. I also forgot to ask that when making this milk of magnesia roll on deodorant, how many essential oil drops do I need to add for each ounce? Thank you!

    • In general, use 15-20 drops essential oil per ounce of milk of magnesia.
If you’re using especially strong essential oils like lemongrass or clary sage, I wouldn’t use more than a few drops of those and then I’d blend them with less intense essential oils (like lavender, cedarwood, orange) to make up the remainder of the 15-20 drops.
Lastly, be sure to do a test patch on a small spot of skin (inner elbow often works well for this) to make sure that you don’t have any adverse reactions to the essential oils if you haven’t used them before.

  2. I’m 69 and living on a limited income, plus by the way I feel, tossing all the store bought health and beauty aids and making my own that aren’t toxic sounds wonderful. I love what I have read about this roll on with milk of magnesia. I have two questions, though. Is there a shelf life for this deodorant, and do you have to shake the bottle up before each use? I look forward to making and using this deodorant. I’m gonna purchase two bottles of Ban roll on, dry the roller ball, put a piece of tape on the ball no wider than the hole to the bottle, then roll the tape around to the other side of the bottle, and pop it out in order to empty, clean and refill with my own deodorant. Then pop the ball back in.

    • Hi Glenyce,
If you’re starting with a new bottle of milk of magnesia and sterilized container, then the deodorant should last at least 6 months.
If using an older bottle of milk of magnesia, check the expiration date on the bottle. Your deodorant should last up to 6 months or the MoM expiration date whichever is sooner.
Fun idea for reusing a deodorant bottle! Please let us know how that works. I bet others might want to try that, too.
      Sarah

      • Well, I tried putting tape on the dried rollerball and rolling the tape to the other side. It didn’t work because the tape kept getting stuck. But I found it was very easy to turn the bottle of roll on deodorant upside down in the basin and squeeze it until the liquid leaves and the roller ball pops out. That system works great.
