DIY Tea Tree Toner for Acne

pimples

acne

zits

breakouts

inflamed red skin

I thought I was done with all that decades ago, but thanks to hormones, I’ve had recurrences of acne in my 30s and now in my 40s.

As a teenager I piled on the benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid.

This over-dried my skin, caused even more oily outbreaks, and inflamed my sensitive skin.

I thought I was doing that right thing, but of course, it made it so much worse.

Thankfully, I now know better.

Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • be gentle with your skin – if you overdo it with washing, your skin is likely to get red and inflamed, which will likely cause more outbreaks.
  • don’t over dry acne-prone skin– making your skin too dry, will actually produce more oil.
  • use a toner after washing your face– Even if you’re short on time, don’t skip the toner.   Your skin’s ph should be around 5.5; however, washing your face with water and cleanser can throw your skin’s ph balance out of whack (to as high as 9).  Using toner brings your skin back down to it’s natural ph level.
  • even acne-prone skin needs a good moisturizer (here’s my recipe)– did you know that some studies suggest that people with oily or combination skin may be producing too much oil because the skin is not getting enough moisture and the skin makes up for it by producing more oil?

What’s in DIY facial toner for acne?

witch hazel – Witch hazel is a natural astringent that minimizes the appearance of pores, reduces inflammation and skin irritations, decreases oil and redness, and leaves skin feeling clean and refreshed.

tea tree essential oil – Tea tree is the powerhouse ingredient in this toner.  It penetrates deep into pores and unblocks sebaceous glands, kills bacteria, and reduces inflammation.  It dries out pimples, whiteheads, blackheads, and other blemishes.

juniper berry essential oil–  Juniper berry has a wide variety of antioxidants (polyphenols, flavonoids, bioflavonoids, and more) to support healthy skin.  Plus it inhibits inflammation and kills the bacteria that blocks pores and causes pimples.

lavender essential oil– Lavender calms and soothes skin, reduces redness, and has potent antioxidants for healthy skin.

Here’s how to use it (same skincare routine morning and night):

  1. remove makeup using coconut oil  (It might sound odd to wipe oil on your face as a first step of cleaning, but oil dissolves oil, so coconut oil or another natural carrier oil is a great way to gently remove mascara, eye shadow, and even foundation.)
  2. wash face with my homemade foaming face wash (here’s my recipe – there are versions for pretty much every skin type – oily, sensitive, acne-prone, dry, mature, normal)
  3. shake toner well to mix and apply this tea tree toner with a cotton round, using gentle upwards motion all over face (avoiding eyes) – shake toner bottle well before each use
  4. finish by moisturizing skin with my DIY face serum (here’s the recipe – just like my foaming face wash there are customized recipes of carrier oil and essential oil blends just right for your skin type whether you have dry, oily, acne-prone, mature, or sensitive skin)
