What’s in mirror & glass cleaner recipe?

white vinegar – removes film from glass surface, cleans dirt & grime,  and eliminates smudges

rubbing alcohol or vodka – evaporates quickly so streaks don’t form, leaves spot-free finish, and shines surface

cornstarch – this is the “secret” ingredient that makes this the BEST glass cleaner!  Why does cornstarch work so well in glass cleaners?  Turns out glass and mirrors aren’t actually perfectly smooth.  They have teeny tiny pits in the surface.  And water can get trapped in those pits and the water in most glass cleaners gets bonded or attracted to the water in those pits. That causes water spots and streaks.  The cornstarch in this DIY glass cleaner breaks those water bonds and results in the most amazing shiny, streak-free, spot-free finish you’ve probably ever seen.

essential oil – disinfects, deodorizes, and cuts through grease, dirt, & residue

Why does it have cornstarch in the recipe?

Our Bathroom mirror is horrible with hard water spots. Wife has tried every cleaner, straight vinegar staight alcohol and nothing will touch it. She wanted a new one blame my use of EO’s
So I found your recipe and tried it and you just saved money and labor it looks like new again
        Thank you!

You don’t add any distilled water to the glass cleaner?

    • Sarah Lewis March 19, 2017 at 8:33 pm - Reply

      Hi Sanday,
I don’t. I tried it with and without distilled water, and for me, it always worked better without the distilled water. Vinegar and rubbing alcohol are so cheap, I’d rather have a better cleaner than stretch out the ingredients with distilled water. But if you want to make a batch last longer, you can add 1-2 cups of warm water to the cornstarch before you add it to the rubbing alcohol and vinegar.

Is it safe to use on car windows and do you have to use the essential oils?

    • Sarah Lewis March 21, 2017 at 3:15 pm - Reply

I’ve used it on my car windows and it’s been fine, but can’t say for sure for all car windows. Best to spot test and see how it works for yours.
Yes, you can use it without the essential oil, but the essential oil does help make it better (cuts through grease & grime plus it smells awesome!)

Can you use this as an all purpose cleaner? I have my kids helping clean their bathroom and would like one bottle of cleaner.

    • Sarah Lewis May 15, 2017 at 8:02 pm - Reply

      Hi Jaime,
This cleaner is great for lots of things in the bath (mirrors, sink faucet, windows), but I wouldn’t use it for everything.
A mix of water, white vinegar and essential oils works great for countertops, toilet, light switches, and doorknobs. For the tub and shower, I use a mix of baking soda, liquid Castile soap, and water – it makes a great scrub that cuts right through soap residue, dirt, and grime. And I finish the tub/shower with a spritz of tea tree and water to help prevent mold & mildew.

Do you have to use a glass spray bottle or,can you use a plastic one?

    • Sarah Lewis June 10, 2017 at 2:37 pm - Reply

You can use certain types of plastic with essential oils. Look for either a #1 (PET) or a #2 (HDPE) on the bottom of the bottle. Either of those kinds are fine to use with diluted essential oils.
