DIY “Beachy Waves” Sea Salt Spray for Hair Recipe

“Beachy Waves” Sea Salt Spray for Hair

Other than my DIY dry shampoo for light and dark hair, this is my favorite homemade essential oil hair recipe this summer!!

I just LOVE the ocean and spending time at the beach with my family, but since we live pretty much smack dab in the middle of the United States (eastern Kansas), we don’t get to the beach as much as I’d like.  That’s why you’ll see me using essential oils to recreate the scent and feeling of being by the sea.  Weather it’s with my sea breeze bath bombs or this homemade California Coast room spray or this sea breeze essential oil inhaler for relaxation.  They all recreate that fresh, slightly sweet, yet clean and refreshing scent of ocean air.

But this beach waves hair spray not only smells amazing it also does all these wonderful things for my hair.  Love it!

  • mimics the amazing way your hair looks after spending the day at the beach
  • enhances natural waves and curls – with a look of perfectly imperfect beachy waves
  • add softness and conditions without weighing hair down
  • builds volume and fullness
  • fights against the drying effects of the summer sun as it moisturizes both the scalp and hair

Plus it’s all natural and cheap.  Bottles of similar store-bought beach waves sprays cost $13-$30+.  But this homemade DIY version costs only pennies.

What’s in this homemade beachy waves hair spray?

distilled water – if you don’t have distilled water, you can use boiled filtered water instead.

dead sea salt– Dead sea salt is known for its therapeutic properties.  Dead Sea Salts contain 21 minerals including magnesium, calcium, sulfur, bromide, iodine, sodium, zinc and potassium.  When massaged into the scalp, dead sea salt can help improve circulation and promote hair growth.  And just like salty sea water, when you combine these salts with water and the oils below, it creates the same soft, gentle “beach hair” waves that you get after spending time by the ocean.

fractionated coconut oil – softens and conditions hair

jojoba oil – protects hair strands from breakage, helps moisturize and condition hair, protects against dry hair, controls and minimizes fizziness, and improves scalp health

lavender and spearmint essential oils – calming and relaxing aromas that are reminiscent of an ocean breeze

  1. This looks like a great recipe! I just wondered if you have a similar recipe that uses sugar instead of salt? Or could you create a copycat for Pureology sugar spray ?
    Thank you

    • I don’t have a recipe like that yet. With the salt, it adds texture to hair. Using sugar instead is interesting because that would create more of a traditional hair spray to hold hair in place. I’ll add that to the list of recipes to create. Thanks for the idea!
