Roller Bottle Recipes for Emotions

I love using essential oils to positively affect my mood!

If you’ve read any of my blog posts you’ve probably picked up that I’m a BIG fan of diffusing essential oils to enhance my moods, and the moods of those around me :)!

I have favorite diffuser blends for pretty much every desired mood!  (click the following moods to get diffuser recipes for that mood)

energy diffuser blends

calm diffuser blends

sleep diffuser blends

focus diffuser blends

happy diffuser blends

… you name it, I diffuse it.

While diffusing for emotions is great, there are many times when I choose to apply essential oils topically instead.

  • when I’m not going to be around a diffuser
  • when I want to affect my mood but not other members of my family
  • when I want an extra boost (in addition to what I’m diffusing)
  • when I want to be discrete
  • when I want to use the essential oils as a perfume

When applying essential oils topically, it’s important to dilute

Essential oils are very strong and potent.  They much more concentrated than the herbs, flowers, and fruits in their original form.  So when I use essential oils topically, I always dilute them with a carrier oil like fractionated coconut.  The roller bottle blends in this post are all designed for occasional use by a healthy adult.  They are 5% dilutions, meaning that 5% of the blend is essential oils and 95% of the blend is carrier oil.  For the standard size 10ml roller bottles, that means 10 drops of essential oil and the rest of the 10ml bottle is filled with carrier oil (like fractionated coconut oil).

How to Make Roller Bottle Blends

1) to a standard 10ml roller bottle add

10 drops essential oil (see recipes below for ideas)

then fill rest of roller bottle with carrier oil like fractionated coconut oil

2) snap the rollerball on the bottle— the easiest way to do this is put the rollerball on the bottle and then screw the cap on– that should snap it right in place

3) shake well to mix the essential oils and carrier oil

4) label your bottle so you know what it is

click here for free printable roller bottle labels

cut your labels out

put them image side down on a piece of packing tape

trim around the label, leaving about 1/8-1/2 inch of tape all the way around the label so that it will stick to the roller bottle

adhere the label to the roller bottle

What brand and size label are you using? I’m not familiar with the 4 across layout. Thanks!

    • Sarah Lewis August 20, 2016 at 11:21 am - Reply

Hi, Lori. I don’t use pre-cut labels (such as Avery labels). Instead I do one of two things: (1) print labels on plain printer paper and then attach them to roller bottles using packing tape. It’s extremely cheap, looks great, and is one of the most durable options I’ve found. (2) I use full sheets of water (and oil) proof vinyl paper that’s specially made to be printed on inkjet printers. There’s a link to the kind I use in the blog post. Be sure to follow the instructions that come with the vinyl paper to make it water and oil proof. – Sarah

Thank you for all the information on your webiste. I am not really sure how to access some things such as the labels. It tells me to sign up and I have signed up. I don’t see a place to log in to access things only allowed with sign up.

    Thank you again 🙂

Hi, Margie. After you enter your email, a link should pop up for the labels (or other printables). When you click on that link, the pdf of the labels (or other printables) should come up. You can then save that pdf or print it. – Sarah

    Hi
What is the shelf life of these, thank you

    • Sarah Lewis February 12, 2017 at 10:22 pm - Reply

      Hi Jennifer,

short answer -> In general, my rule of thumb is that when using fractionated coconut oil, roller bottles should have a shelf life of at least a year (and could be considerably longer).

little bit longer answer -> The shelf life of the roller bottles will depend on the carrier oil and specific essential oils you use. Fractionated coconut oil has an almost infinite shelf life, while rosehip seed oil only has a 6 month shelf life (and then you also have to factor in how long you’ve had the oil before making the roller bottle). Citrus essential oils like lemon and orange only have a shelf life of 1 year, while patchouli can last for more than 10 years.

Sarah, I can hardly believe what I have just discovered. “The pot of gold at the end of the rainbow” has me jumping for joy. Yipeeeee, Can hard,y wait for my inhalers to come so I can get with it.
I do have one question. I have over 150 oils. I know, shame on me and I’m just gettin into this) Bit I don’t have spruce, which I want for the grounding inhalers. Is there something else I could substitute. Imagine having all these oils and I don’t have (hoping I don’t need) spruce. Tsk tsk!
One more thing. I’ve searched for a ‘search’ button, but can’t find one. Hoping it’s there somewhere but I just haven’t found it.
Thankyou so very much for this pot of gold. Thanks for sharing it.
    Blessings on you,

      Hi Roberta,
What a great note! Thanks for all the kind words. You definitely warmed my heart.
